Philson’s first collection of limited-edition NFTs begins with a study from Aenigma, a new body of work that continues the artist’s exploration of material and composition. The original physical piece, Study N.03, is composed of colorful sculptural blocks that are meticulously puzzled together within the rectangular frame, a process that recalls topics of improvisation, chance and control present in the artist’s earlier works.
To create the composition, Philson layers colors of pigment to create striated slabs that resemble natural wood in texture and hardness, with natural markings, grooves and divots, and rough, brittle edges that are reminiscent of tree bark. The slabs are then cut to size and assembled on the plane, resulting in a dynamic linear composition that echoes the gestures used by the artist to fit each piece together — rotating, flipping and turning.
For his first NFT collection, Philson builds upon Study N.03, retaining the composition in the original piece and reimagining it in nine additional color studies. The series explores the new possibilities of digitized artwork, including the advent of quick iteration and experimentation, as well as new features such as animation, which features prominently in the series. The artist’s animated movements can be likened to water flowing across the topography of the piece — a time-lapsed glimpse of the process of erosion upon the earth’s geographic features.
Each NFT in Volume 1 is a limited edition of one, and the NFT of the original piece is available for purchase in tandem with the original physical painting.
